🌸 What Is “Parfum” in Skincare — and Why We Don’t Use It
You’ve probably seen the word “parfum” or “fragrance” listed on the back of a beauty product—but what exactly is it?
The short answer? It’s a mystery mix of undisclosed chemicals, and that’s exactly why we don’t use it at Herbs on the Hill.
🧪 What “Parfum” Really Means
In ingredient lists, the word “parfum” (or sometimes just “fragrance”) is a catch-all term that can legally include dozens—or even hundreds—of synthetic chemicals.
These lab-made compounds are used to give products a “signature scent,” and because they’re considered a trade secret, brands are not required to tell you what’s in them.
⚠️ That means when you see “parfum” on the label…
You have no way of knowing what you’re putting on your skin.
🧼 Why It Matters
Here’s why parfum is controversial—and why we leave it out entirely:
-
Lack of transparency – You deserve to know what’s in your products.
-
Synthetic fragrance ingredients are a common trigger for:
-
Skin irritation and rashes
-
Headaches or migraines
-
Hormonal disruption in sensitive individuals
-
-
Some fragrance mixes contain phthalates—a group of chemicals linked to endocrine disruption and banned in parts of the EU.
🌿 What We Use Instead: Real Scent From Nature
At Herbs on the Hill, we believe scent should come from something real—and do something good for your skin and spirit.
That’s why we use:
-
Whole essential oils like lavender, neroli, and frankincense
-
Botanical extracts and flower waters
-
Herbal infusions that gently scent while soothing the skin
Each scent has a story, a purpose, and a soul. Whether it's the calming breath of lavender or the grounding touch of cedarwood, you’ll never find mystery chemicals hidden behind a “fragrance” label here.
